Chrysler Reports $1.7 Billion Net Profit For 2012
Posted JANUARY 30, 2013 by Charles V. Tines / The Detroit News
Chrysler Group LLC reported a net profit of almost $1.7 billion for 2012 Wednesday and fourth-quarter earnings of $378 million.
That was an eightfold improvement over the $183 million the company earned in 2011 and offered further proof of the automaker's turnaround. But CEO Sergio Marchionne stressed that Chrysler's recovery is still a work in progress.
"While we are pleased to have achieved strong financial results in 2012, the enterprise we are crafting is not complete," he said in a statement.
"The goals we've set for the year ahead reflect a common desire by everyone from leadership to the shop floor to succeed and sustain the power of the house we are building," Marchionne continued. "Our aim is meaningful, but it is not complicated, and only a preoccupation with quality can achieve it.
"We pause for a moment to enjoy our accomplishments, but we will not stop. Our continued achievement relies upon maintaining a humble spirit and an intense focus on the integrity of our work. And so we press on."
Last year was an epic year for Chrysler, which posted quarter after quarter of solid profits and market share gains less than three years after emerging from bankruptcy. But 2012 was a hard year for Fiat, which struggled as European automobile sales continued to decline in the face of an ongoing regional economic crisis.
When Fiat took over Chrysler as part of a 2009 bailout agreement brokered by the Obama administration, many analysts on both sides of the Atlantic worried the Auburn Hills automaker would drag the Italian manufacturer down with it. Instead, Chrysler has become Fiat's salvation, its growing profits offsetting Fiat's mounting losses.
"Chrysler concluded a very successful 2012 with a robust fourth-quarter performance," said analyst Jesse Toprak of TrueCar.com in a report released Tuesday.

What The Next-Generation Minivans May Look Like
Posted on January 21st, 2013 • by David Zatz/ allpar.com
Though the architecture for the next-generation Chrysler minivans has been finalized, the actual vehicles have not, as Chrysler wrestles with customer desires and market issues. CEO Sergio Marchionne has said numerous times that he intends to whittle the two minivans, which were nearly identical from 2008 to 2010 and are now differentiated largely by price and features, down to a single van. This could make it easier to continue winning the #1 sales position over Toyota and Honda; while Chrysler has always had the highest combined minivan sales (Dodge plus Chrysler), Honda has (though not in 2012) grabbed the #1 sales spot for Odyssey over either Caravan and Town & Country. But which would be turned into a crossover, and which would stay the minivan?
In Canada, the Dodge Caravan is king of the minivans; in the US, the Dodge is more of a fleet standby, with Chrysler Town & Country getting most of the retail sales. While the company could opt for a split solution — Chrysler Town & Country in the US, Lancia/Chrysler Voyager in Europe, and Dodge Caravan in Canada — that would be messy, as the crossover in the US would likely be the Dodge Caravan. It would complicate near-border ad campaigns, production, and more — since styling would also need to be different. One solution, of course, would be keeping both as minivans, but making the Dodge much more of a Dodge — increasing its sportiness in look and feel, and making it a niche vehicle in the US, with more options in Canada. In both countries, the Chrysler minivan would be what it is now — an upscale, conventional minivan. By giving the Dodge more of a performance emphasis, the company could also bias the Chrysler towards comfort rather than cornering.

2014 Grand Cherokee Extreme Makeover
For many years, auto shows were all about the latest new vehicles and eye-catching concepts.
Not anymore.
Today, what the industry calls "midcycle refreshes" — extreme makeovers of existing cars and trucks — have become just as important for some automakers, particularly those trying to avoid the mistakes of the past.
Next week at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit, for example, Chrysler Group LLC's biggest news is expected to be an updated version of its popular Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee will be heading to dealers in mid-2013. This mid-cycle refresh has few exterior changes — a new front fascia and a new, much-improved tailgate — coupled with a mildly modified interior, UConnect Access, the same engines, and the new “Torqueflite 8” eight-speed transmission. The latter should have a major impact on the Grand Cherokee, allowing it to get better gas mileage and significantly quicker acceleration. (oh2o wrote that, at least at first, the Chrysler-built 845RE would be used with the V6, and the ZF-built 8HP70 would be used on the diesel, standard Hemi, and SRT8 Hemi.)

2013 Ram 1500 Ride & Drive
Published on Aug 23, 2012 by Javier Mota
The new 2013 Ram 1500 is the Ram Truck brand's latest entry into the ultra-competitive full-size, light-duty pickup truck segment. The new truck represents the brand's first iteration to its most recognized truck since the inception of the Ram nameplate in 2011.
The new 2013 Ram 1500 is the latest innovation off Ram's full-size, body-on-frame truck architecture, designed, engineered and executed to strike at the emotional chords of the "Guts and Glory" mindset of enthusiasts and potential buyers. In form and function, the new 2013 Ram 1500 conveys boldness, valor, virtue and power-oriented capability like no other in its class, but it does so, aesthetically and functionally, at a different level.
