Berry Gordy Star Of New Motown-Themed Chrysler Ad

Published on Dec 20, 2012 by Chrysler

Detroit — Chrysler recruited hometown star Eminem for a memorable 2011 Super Bowl ad that introduced the tagline "Imported From Detroit."

The automaker is going back to that well with an ad campaign it launched Thursday relying on another homegrown entertainment figure: Motown Records founder Berry Gordy.

"We are Motown, and this is what we do," the 83-year-old Rock and Roll Hall of Famer says at the conclusion of the 60-second commercial that promotes both the new 2013 Chrysler 300 Motown Edition as well as an upcoming Broadway musical based on Gordy's life.

Gordy's line is a play on the Eminem spot that featured the rapper driving a sleek Chrysler through the streets of Detroit, proudly cruising by the city's landmarks. In his case, the journey ended at Detroit's Fox Theatre, where he pointed to the camera and defiantly stated: "This is the Motor City, and this is what we do."

The new ad features Gordy sitting in the backseat of a white Chrysler 300 Motown, which is parked outside the "Hitsville, U.S.A." building in Detroit. Set to the Marvin Gaye-Tammi Terrell version of "Ain't No Mountain High Enough," the ad shows Gordy being driven through the streets of Detroit and eventually ending up in front of New York's Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, where "Motown: The Musical" will begin its run of preview performances March 11 ahead of the official opening on April 14.

Figuring in the 2-minute "Halftime in America" ad that starred Clint Eastwood and ran during the 2012 Super Bowl, Chrysler now has churned out three pro-Detroit ads featuring entertainment heavyweights in a 22-month span.

"Our collaboration with Motown Records elevates our passion to express our Detroit roots further," said Saad Chehab, president and CEO of the Chrysler brand.

Around the same time "Motown: The Musical" makes its debut, so will the Motown-themed Chrysler 300, which has a starting price of $32,995 excluding shipping. The limited-edition sedan also comes loaded with 100 tracks from original Motown recording artists and features the Motown logo on the front seatbacks.

"Motown: The Musical" stars Brandon Victor Dixon as Gordy and Valisia LeKae as Motown star Diana Ross. Gordy is producing and writing the book for the show, and he also penned a few original songs for it.

Chrysler Undecided On Which Brand Will Get Next Minivan

Published December 16, 2012 by Detroit Free Press

With four design concepts in the mix, Chrysler continues to whipsaw on which brand will be the sole source of the next generation of minivan -- a vehicle that has come to define the automaker and feed the bottom line.

The four concepts: a Dodge and a Chrysler minivan and a Dodge and a Chrysler crossover, are being shown to consumer clinics now as the company figures out how to badge them for sale in 2014 as 2015 models.

Minivans are personal at Chrysler -- they rescued the automaker from the brink of financial collapse in 1983 and continued to generate millions in profits by leading the market for decades in a segment that exceeded 1 million units for 12 years.

Currently the automaker sells two brands of minivan: the Chrysler Town & Country and the Dodge Grand Caravan. But when the next-generation redesign goes on sale, only one brand will sell a traditional minivan with sliding doors. The other will get a crossover that rides on the same underpinnings but with conventional doors.

Which storied minivan nameplate survives?

CEO Sergio Marchionne keeps fanning the speculative flames. Initial comments had Chrysler retaining the Town & Country, which for years outsold the Dodge in the U.S. But the CEO's most recent remarks on the topic suggested Dodge will keep the minivan, creating room for a premium crossover for the Chrysler brand.

Marchionne can vacillate because design chief Ralph Gilles and his team have designed four scenarios, creating markedly different minivans for each brand, as well as distinctive crossovers.

"That's why he (Marchionne) can say what he's saying because he knows we have several projects cooking," Gilles told the Free Press.

"We know not all of them will see the light of day, but we spend a lot of time studying scenarios, trying out designs that could work in each scenario so we're ready whichever way it goes," Gilles said. "Luckily the designs, even though they look completely different, they are very transferable. It makes for more work for us but we don't mind because there are great nuggets we can use in future programs."

Chrysler remains committed to the minivan segment that was more than 1 million strong annually from 1993 to 2005 but fell to 424,000 in 2009. This year, sales are already back to more than 532,000 with one more month to report.

"They are my bread and butter," said Saad Chehab, head of the Chrysler brand, and he has no intention of relinquishing leadership.

"Look at the competition: Honda and Toyota are investing in refreshes and renewals in minivans," Chehab said.

Families drove station wagons in 1980 when Chrysler decided to proceed with a funny-looking vehicle it called the "garageable van."

It was a huge gamble on a nameless vehicle by a company on the brink of financial collapse and assembled by a nervous workforce staking their livelihoods on its success.

Chrysler staked its claim when the first minivan, a blue Plymouth Voyager with wood trim, rolled off the line in Windsor on Oct. 3, 1983.

Within a month, there was a four-month backlog of orders, and the minivan became Chrysler's first signature vehicle.

Chrysler profits went from $925 million in 1983 to $2.4 billion in 1984, and the minivan was credited with saving the company. Chrysler had no serious competition until the 1994 Ford Windstar. The Town & Country held the sales crown until the Honda Odyssey toppled it in 2007. By 2010, the Chrysler luxury van was back on top and this year, the Dodge is ahead of the field.

Bob Shuman, owner of Shuman Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram in Walled Lake, said minivans account for about 15% of his sales and have been as high as 40% over the years. He leases a lot of Chrysler Town & Country minivans because they have the higher residual value.

If the decision is to give Dodge the next minivan, he is not concerned. "I'm sure there will be a top Dodge trim level with a high residual that will work well as a lease vehicle," he said.

"My store has always been a minivan store," Shuman said. "It's the most efficient and practical vehicle we sell." And it's not just families. Many buyers are empty-nesters and those who want space and functionality.

"Somehow it got a stigma attached. But we still sell a lot of them," Shuman said.

Gilles won't say which concepts are resonating in the clinics and recognizes that consumer tastes are always changing.

Chehab agrees. "Every week or two there is something new or a situation or trend that we look at and it kind of tweaks our thinking," he said, in the constant pursuit of products relevant to the marketplace that will be a sales home run.

Gilles sees new products changing the nature of both Chrysler and Dodge.

"The beauty of this is I think the brands are evolving real-time right now," Gilles said. "The Dart has brought a new dimension to Dodge while the S (performance) models are bringing in younger Chrysler buyers.

"When you see the median age of a brand ebb downwards you see the potential," he said.

Wrangler Named Winner Of 4-Wheeler Of The Year Award

Posted on December 5th, 2012 • by Bill Cawthon Allpar.com

The editors of Four Wheeler magazine have named the 2013 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Moab Edition as the winner of the respected “Four Wheeler of the Year.”

The latest award comes a year after the Wrangler Rubicon took the honors and just two years after the Grand Cherokee did the same. Four Wheeler also named the Wrangler Rubicon the Best 4×4 vehicle of the 2000-2009 decade.

“The Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Moab is an extremely versatile vehicle, and was a hands-down trail favorite of the Four Wheeler judges,” said John Cappa, Four Wheeler editor. “The improved interior comfort, amenities, power and overall performance both on- and off-road make it worthy of being our 2013 Four Wheeler of the Year.”

To qualify for the competition, entries had to be entirely new or have substantial mechanical revisions from a previous model year. Testing was conducted over more than a thousand miles on a variety of terrain, including pavement, gravel, dirt, sand, rocks and mud.

“The new Jeep Wrangler Moab edition is a perfect example of listening to our loyal Wrangler owners, who appreciate new levels of capability in a unique package,” said Mike Manley, Jeep Brand CEO. “The Moab edition recognizes a die-hard off-roading destination Jeep owners love, while providing even more capability, including winch-capable steel bumpers, upgraded rock rails and a rear locker. We’re especially pleased that the influential Four Wheeler editors put our latest Jeep Wrangler to the test and clearly recognized its capability.”

THE CHRYSLER 300 GLACIER

Winters in the cold-weather states are far more enjoyable when you embrace and take advantage of the season. That’s a much easier proposition when you drive a vehicle that (1) handles well even in poor conditions and (2) looks good while doing it. With a capable all-wheel-drive (AWD) system, not to mention an icy-cool demeanor and “athletic-luxury” styling, the new 2013 Chrysler 300 Glacier is a vehicle that meets and exceeds both of those demands.

What is it that makes the AWD system in this car so capable? The Chrysler 300 Glacier features a segment-exclusive active transfer case and front-axle-disconnect system. When AWD is not required, the system automatically disconnects the front axle to maximize fuel economy while still providing the outstanding fun-to-drive performance inherent to rear-wheel-drive vehicles.

In our opinion, no other major automotive manufacturer can boast a car that looks this icy cool. We know claims like that are always subjective, but given that the Glacier builds on the avant-garde appearance of the Chrysler 300S, we feel it’s a statement that is accurate nonetheless. Here are some of the finer points of the vehicle’s fit and finish:

- Unique body-color fascia accents

- Black chrome sculpted horizontal grille blades

- Unique 19-inch, eight-spoke aluminum wheels finished in Satin Carbon with P235/55R19 all-season performance tires

- 12-way power driver and passenger sport seats with leather-wrapped bolsters in black, finished with black French-seamed stitching and with black seat centers featuring black “Falls” cloth

- Exclusive use of Piano Black on interior center stack, instrument panel, steering wheel, gauge cluster and door panel elements

- Matte carbon hydrographic accents and black floor mats with black velour binding and “Glacier” logo embroidered

Stay tuned to Forward Look for more information regarding the all-new 2013 Chrysler 300 Glacier. In the meantime, please visit the Glacier page at Chrysler.com to see additional photos of the vehicle.

2013 Chevy Equinox v Ford Explorer v Jeep Grand Cherokee Off-Road Mashup AWD Tech Review

Published on Dec 2, 2012 by romanmicagearguy

The brand new 2013 Chevrolet Equinox and the Ford Explorer and the Jeep Grand Cherokee Summit Overland don't have a lot in common. However all three of these vehicle have a very different approach to powering all four wheels, in other words, they all have one form or another of all-wheel-drive and terrain management technology. We thought it would be interesting, informative and fun to try these three very different AWD vehicles off-road in a real world test to see which one can best handle our Colorado Mountain off-road terrain. In this battle of 4X4 people haulers we take all three vehicles up our standard rugged Colorado trail to see which one can make it all the way to the top. Check out another fun and real world TFLcar Mashup test as we get wet, muddy and rocky in this off-road AWD technology comparison and review.

2013 Chrysler Town & Country S

Published on Nov 30, 2012 by YouCarPress

Available in Brilliant Black, Deep Cherry Red, Stone White or Billet Silver, the 2013 Town & Country S gets revised trim that adds contrast to the minivan's typically bright exterior treatment. A black chrome grille is combined with black-background Chrysler Winged badges front and rear, a black rear fascia step pad, "S" model badging, 17-inch aluminum wheels with polished face and black-painted pockets and blacked-out headlight bezels (delayed availability).

The interior features a monotone black interior unique to the Town & Country S. It starts with the Black Torino leather seats with an "S" logo embroidered in the seat backs and black Ballistic cloth seat inserts. The seats also feature grey stitching as do the door armrests. Piano Black gloss appliques are found on the instrument panel and on the spokes of the black leather-wrapped steering wheel, and the Chrysler Winged badge on the wheel matches the black background-look of the exterior badging. Finishing interior touches include a black headliner and upper consoles, black center console and an "S" logo in the instrument cluster.

The segment-exclusive dual-screen Blu-Ray DVD system with HDMI input, two USB recharging ports, a 12v outlet and a 115v two-prong outlet is standard. This system, new for 2013, allows rear seat passengers to view standard and Blu-Ray DVDs or to play a high-definition video game system on the new, higher definition, screens. Wireless headphones allow back seat passengers to enjoy this state-of-the-art system without forcing front seat passengers to hear the accompanying audio.

The 2013 Town & Country S also features a performance suspension that adds a new level of handling dynamics to the driving experience, yet still provides a comfortable ride that's expected in a luxury minivan.

Town & Country's award-winning powertrain delivers best-in-class horsepower without sacrificing fuel efficiency. The 3.6-liter Pentastar V-6 engine is a two-time "Ward's 10 Best Engine" winner and produces 283 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque. The V-6 is mated to the 62TE six-speed automatic transmission. A fuel economizer mode helps the driver maximize fuel efficiency, and premium, lower-rolling-resistance tires, and low-drag brake calipers and rear bearings make great fuel economy possible. Town & Country achieves 17 miles per gallon (mpg) in the city, 25 on the highway.

The 2013 Chrysler Town & Country offers over 40 available safety, security and technology features, providing customers the safety they expect to ensure peace of mind when traveling. Standard safety features include ParkView rear back up camera, front seat-mounted air bags, a driver-side inflatable knee blocker, advanced multi-stage driver and front passenger air bags, side-curtain air bags for all three rows, and electronic stability control, including Brake Assist and all-speed traction control. Optional on Touring and standard on Touring L and Limited models is the SafetyTec Group consisting of rain-sensitive windshield wipers, Smartbeam headlamps, ParkSense rear park assist system, Blind-spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path detection.

New for 2013 is standard trailer sway damping that monitors a towed trailer's behavior and automatically uses Town & Country's anti-lock braking system to mitigate any swaying motions.

The 2013 Chrysler Town & Country minivan is built at Chrysler Group LLC's Windsor Assembly Plant in Windsor, Ontario, Canada.

Time For Smaller Police Cars?

USA Today, Nov. 20

Why must police cruisers always be full-size, often rear-wheel-drive sedans, USA Today asked. Some departments are taking a chance on smaller police cars, saving gas and setting a good example, the paper noted. The latest is the police department in Belvidere, Ill., which turned a new Dodge Dart into its latest public safety vehicle, the story said. Notably, the Dart gets 24 miles per gallon in the city, 34 mpg on the highway in its thirstiest form, USA Today noted. There's room for a small police car, the paper said. Cops love big police cars, both for the space for them, for their computers, shotguns and equipment and to allow for the barrier between them and the handcuffed suspects they carry in back, the story said. But with gas prices soaring and departments under budget pressure, the time has come to consider more fuel-efficient patrol cars, USA Today said.

Latest News About Chrysler On Autoweek

Published on Sep 11, 2012 by AutoweekUSA

Things had been a bit quiet in Viper land since the car's debut at the New York auto show last spring, but no longer. Chrysler on Monday said that the 2013 SRT Viper will carry a base sticker price of $99,390 including the shipping charges. That brings the 640-hp Viper in about 13 grand under a Corvette ZR1. Step up to the Viper's GTS trim level and the sticker jumps to $122,390. Keep in mind those prices will rise a bit once the gas guzzler tax gets added on.

If you've got Viper fever, dealers will begin taking orders next month and deliveries are expected to begin in late December or early January.

2nd wave of Dodge Dart Marketing To Begin As Dealers Wait For Inventory

Dodge is launching a second wave of marketing for its Dart compact sedan as more cars begin arriving in dealerships.

While a 90-second Dart commercial debuted July 10, the company plans to launch a broader campaign this month that will include additional TV spots, print and digital advertising.

The goal of the first commercial for the Dart was to build awareness of the new car. The new campaign will likely highlight features and performance.

Sales of the Dart, Chrysler's most important new car this year, have been constrained by a deliberately slow launch that limited consumers initially to a manual transmission.

Developed from the underlying structure of the Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the Dart is the first car that evolved from computer design to showroom since the 2009 marriage between Chrysler and majority-owner Fiat.

"We've employed very much a disciplined, methodical, unwavering focus on quality with respect to the ramp-up of the 2013 Dart," Reid Bigland, Dodge CEO and Chrysler's U.S. sales chief, said this week.

Chrysler expects August sales of the Dart will top 3,000 in the U.S. and 400 in Canada.

"September will be substantially more than August," Bigland said.

Chrysler is pleased with Dart sales even though expected August sales are only a fraction of normal monthly sales for top competitors. Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla typically sell 25,000 or more cars per month. Monthly sales of the Ford Focus have topped 21,000 this year and sales of the Chevrolet Cruze have topped 18,000. While production of the Dart began in May, most dealers were lucky if they had a half-dozen Darts in early August.

"We are selling everything we've got," said David Kelleher, a dealer in Glen Mills, Pa., and chairman of Chrysler's National Dealer Council.

At the end of July, Chrysler dealers had just 8,100 Darts to sell compared with 56,000 for the Chevrolet Cruze, 51,800 for Honda Civic, 36,500 for Mazda3, 35,800 for Ford Focus, and 14,000 for the Hyundai Elantra, according to WardsAuto.

Kelleher -- who already has booked eight sales for September -- expects Dart sales will increase substantially once dealer inventory approaches 20,000 later this month.

Dealers also say sales are slower because Chrysler produced only manual transmissions with a 1.4-liter engine for several weeks before it began production of automatic transmissions with the 2.0-liter Tigershark engine.

Bigland, in a statement Friday, said Chrysler intentionally started with manual transmissions even though a majority of Americans prefer cars with automatic transmissions.

"If you think about the Dart and its Alfa Romeo Guilietta underpinnings ... the 1.4 MultiAir Turbo engine and six-speed manual transmission combination represent the true driving dynamic feel of the Dart, and that's clearly what we wanted to establish initially in the marketplace."

"They laid out the production plan for me, and we haven't missed one note of that plan," Kelleher said. "The automatics even got here a week earlier than they were supposed to."

Carl Galeana, owner of Galeana's Van Dyke Dodge, said he sold 11 Dodge Darts in August.

"I think that is a good number given my initial inventory," Galeana said. "When we get ramped up, I expect Dart to be a 30- to 40-permonth vehicle."

2013 Chrysler 300 S vs Ford Taurus Mile High Mashup Review

Published on Aug 31, 2012 by romanmicagearguy

( http://www.TFLcar.com ) The 2013 Ford Taurus and the Chrysler 300 S both have V-6 engines, both seat 5 passengers and both have all-wheel-drive. They also both and recently redesigned big American family sedans. In fact to call this video Mashup Review is a stretch as both cars compete directly with each other. Perhaps the biggest difference between the two cars is that the Chrysler has 4 more horsepower at 292 versus the Ford's 288 HP. So the obvious question is which of these two cars is better. Check out this video "Mashup" to find out.

WINNER!!!
